Popular culture can be defined as those things around us that bombard us from all types
of media. These are items that can and do change rapidly based on common popularity. More
specifically, pop culture is a combination of anything that plays a part in shaping our everyday
consumer decisions and impressions of those things considered by the masses to be hip and cool.
To me popular culture represents largely an attempt by the mass media to sway my
decisions one way or the other. Its’ very design is to influence my popular tastes, wants, and
needs. As I stated above, I believe that popular culture is the media’s attempt to sway my
decisions as a consumer. Understanding the impact of popular culture on my everyday life helps me filter through the fads and popularity to make well thought out decisions most important to me and my family. As a father I feel the impact of pop culture more than those without kids. There is an unbelievable amount of advertising geared directly at kids. Therefore, it is important to shelter them from the impact. Children are not able to filter through as adults are.
Why is an understanding of popular culture relevant to you in a business environment and in your present and future career?
Popular culture is not limited to those it impacts most directly. It originates from the
business environment such as an advertising agency. As a business person it is important to be cognizant of what pop culture is up to. To understand those things most likely to have the impact you desire for your business in the marketplace. Having an in depth understanding of popular culture will allow one to make much more impactful decisions when deciding how to market products, who to market them too, what’s hot and what’s not. These decisions are all geared around making decisions that will hopefully integrate your product into mainstream pop culture. Popular culture relevance does not stop at the present. In order to be successful in business it is important to be able to recognize trending in popular culture so as to predict where it will go next. This is important when choosing directions to take a company. If a decision is made against the direction of popular culture it could be devastating.
What would you consider to be a pop culture artifact? And why would you choose it?
I have chosen the popular TV show “Heroes” as my artifact to represent popular culture. I chose this particular show because I think it represents exactly what popular culture is and its impact on the masses. This show took the viewing world by storm and is now number one in its time slot. People everywhere are talking about this show. When something catches the masses as this show has, it is instantly thrust to the top of pop culture. Another was to define pop culture may me “mass appeal” instantly.
